DTE Energy's largest operating subsidiaries are Detroit Edison, an electric utility serving 2.2 million customers in Southeastern Michigan, and Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. (MichCon), a natural gas utility serving 1.3 million customers in Michigan. DTE Energy has 10,300 employees in utility and non-utility subsidiaries involved in a wide range of energy-related businesses. In 1886, the Edison Illuminating Co. of Detroit was organized and began serving its first customers.
